Board of Directors
Mary Anne Bennett, President and Volunteer Coordinator-Mary Anne is a board member of the Nisswa-Stamman, a music festival dedicated to Scandinavian Folk Music in its 12th year, a cellist with the Heartland Symphony Orchestra, retired visual arts instructor, and grant writer and coordinator for schools and historical organizations. She has also served on boards for Minnesota International Health Volunteers, Minnesota Alliance for Arts Education, Montevideo Norwest Bank, Minnesota Division of American Association of University Women, Chippewa Historical Society, and the Governor’s Commission on the Arts
Leslie Zander, Vice-President Community Music Director-Leslie is a music teacher at Forestview Middle School in Baxter, MN, and concertmaster of the Heartland Symphony Orchestra where she is also on the Board of Directors. Leslie coordinates our Community Concert and is a musician with the Lakes Area Music Festival.
Bob Dryden – Secretary -Bob is a retired theater teacher and director from Central Lakes College where twenty years ago, he created and directed “Geritol Frolics”, a production of singing and dancing performed by those who 55+ years. Bob is also the former owner of an area gift store. He sings with Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota and has also served on its board.
Mary Farmer – Treasurer and Liaison to The Crossing Arts-Mary is a board member of The Crossing Arts Alliance, and general partner of Nisswa Tax Service. She also sings in her church choir and has been on numerous committees and the board of her church. She is also active with AAUW, PFLAG, Women’s League of Voters and is a former bookstore owner.
Carol Russell, Board member and Promotions Director-Carol is one of the founding partners and CEO of Russell Herder, a Brainerd and Minneapolis-based marketing, advertising, public relations and digital communications firm with a regional and national client base. Carol serves on the Minnesota Thunder Advisory Board (Minnesota’s professional soccer team) and has served in leadership positions with the following organizations: Brainerd Family YMCA, Brainerd Family YMCA Foundation, BSU Foundation, First Congregational Church of Brainerd, Brainerd Area Chamber of Commerce, plus various arts organizations and private corporate boards.
Don Wennberg – Board Member and Marketing -Don is a retired Brainerd, MN surgeon and Medical Director Brainerd Medical Center. He is an active volunteer and board member of the Heartland Symphony Orchestra. Don is past president of his church and is also on the board for Lakes Area Concert Association and has served on several other boards.
Norbert Nielubowski – Board Member -Norbert has been a member of the Minnesota Orchestra since 1987. He is the artistic director of the Musical Offering, a chamber ensemble consisting primarily of Minnesota Orchestra members. He also teaches and coaches chamber music at the University of Minnesota. Norbert serves as a liaison to professional musicians and brings expertise about chamber music repertoire.

Scott Lykins, Founder and Artistic Director-Scott is a graduate of the Rochester, New York’s Eastman School of Music where he earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Cello Performance and certificate in its Catherine Filene Shouse Arts Leadership Program. He conceived and executed the widely-viewed, successful inaugural Lakes Area Chamber Music Festival in 2009. In 2011, more than 3000 Brainerd lakes residents and visitors attended six events presented by talented graduate music performance students and professional members of the Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and upper Midwest music ensembles.
Sue Johnson, Executive Director-Sue is a retired music teacher and church choir director. She is a member and past president of the Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota. Sue is active in theatre in Pequot Lakes and the Central Lakes College and enjoys substitute teaching.
John Taylor Ward, Assistant Artistic Director-Baritone John Taylor Ward, of Boone, NC, is also a Co-Founder of LAMF. Taylor has been performing in opera, recital, musical theatre, and oratorio since the age of five. He attended the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and holds a Bachelor’s of Music from the Eastman School of Music. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate at the Yale School of Music. Taylor serves as artistic director for the festival’s opera.
Alexander Pena, Children Community Education Director-Alex is a founding Lakes Area Music Festival violist, teaching assistant to Rochester, New York’s Eastman’s School of Music’s George Taylor, and teacher at Early Childhood Music at Eastman Community Music School. In 2012, he developed our children’s day camp, Explore Music!
Alice Ritter, Board member, Finance Director-Alice is the office manager of The Crossing Arts Alliance and is also employed by Nisswa Tax Service.
John Windh, Adult Community Education Director-John is a retired Professor of Music History and Choir Director at Kenosha, Wisconsin’s Carthage College, and Nisswa, MN resident.
Jean and Chip Borkenhagen, Program Book Editors-Jean and Chip are founders and former publishers of Lake Country Journal, a lifestyle magazine for north-central Minnesota, and owners of RiverPlace Communications Arts/Evergreen Press.
Tim Yeh, webmaster-Tim is a practicing hematologist-medical oncologist, and owner of Brainerd Hematology-Oncology, P.C.
Dave Boran – photographer -Dave is a family practice physician now serving as Chief Medical Officer for Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
Curt Nielsen, Marketing -Curt is the retired administrator of the Brainerd Medical Center and president of The Crossing Arts Alliance. He also is on the board of Lakes Area Concert Series and at his church.
